Got a taxi into town to post a parcel, now chilling in a bar called The Fat Gadgie (Gadgie is northern speak for man/bloke) with a pint of Enfield, London Porter. Yes, I bought the bar man a drink too.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s a nice quiet bar, no food just different casks of ales and porters each week or so from around the U.K.

In honour of another OPPO who hails from Wylam.

I think I’ll have to get a pint of Wylam, Reality Asylum.

Kinja'd!!!

Turns out they don’t sell Reality Asylum in pints but two thirds of a pint as it’s 7.5%.

Wow, that’s citrusy.

This high backed leather chair is doing nothing to motivate me to leave. It’s so relaxing and comfy.

You rang? Yeh, the Wylam beers at the moment are really hit and miss. They seem to be pushing out a new one every month, catering to the citrus and IPA fad, and in this new line-up I’ve never actually found one that I really like. Open 2 Persuasion was good, but also 8%!

FYI Mark Steel’s In Town was in Carlisle last week, worth a listen on iPlayer.

It’s quite pleasant. I’m not into amber ales, and this is border line on whether it is or not.

I wouldn’t buy it again but if one was bought for me, I wouldn’t turn it down. I like this place, The Fat Gadgie, but they change their drinks all the time so if you find a good one, one week you can’t come back the next week for another.

Saying that, they do 25% of if you buy a can or bottle to take away, so I've a can of Firestone, Union Jack IPA and a bottle of Burning, Robust Porter to take home with me.

Starred for buying the barman a drink - always an excellent idea to offer, especially when things are quiet and you’re hanging out for a while. Looks like a nice joint- enjoy!

Takeaway pubs are the best, m y local sells takeaway beer in 2 pint bags.

Do they ever ha ve any of the Fyn e ales on?  I can heartily recommend Jarl. Whenever it’s on, I don’t drink anything else.

It’s a lovely place. A modern day pub atmosphere, somewhere to pop in for a pint or two on the way home sort of place.

You should always offer the bar man (or woman) a drink if it’s quiet or your the only one at the bar. They may not drink it there and then (that’ll be illegal) but they can have it when the bar closes.

Treat the bar person right and they’ll treat you right, especially when it comes c losing time, rather than kick you out half an hour afterwards, they’ll come and join you for a gnatter.

Exactly right - and it makes the visit all the more enjoyable if you ask me.

Though, in Chicago, the fact that they can’t drink behind the bar while working doesn’t necessarily stop them :)

It's not a place I come often enough to know I'm afraid. Last week after visiting the doctor's I really could of done with a pint (or several), but they were closed, it was quite early on, so I'll let them off. But I do need to come more often.

Lol. A couple of years ago in the same bar. A friend bought me a bottle of The Ardmore (bloody awful whisky, don’t do it) and I asked for a couple of glasses to try it. The bar man jokingly said, ‘yes, just before I throw you out’, I asked for a third glass for him and he was open to it, we all tried a bit and he was okay though I had to turn away from my friend to hide my distain for the whisky (my friend made it up the following year with a bottle of Auchentoshan).

Ha - I’ve spent quite a few afternoons in bars where the staff would buy a round for everyone at the bar, then we would reciprocate, then the staff would do it again, etc...

Miss those days - doesn’t happen with a 2 year old at home and a wife who often works weekends!

It makes it all the more worthwhile when you do too.
